Donald Trump And His Allies Take A Surprisingly Larger Role In The Alabama Senate Race

A political nonprofit loyal to President Donald Trump will spend nearly $500,000 to boost interim Alabama Sen. Luther Strange in a high-stakes Republican runoff election next week.

America First Policies will pay for pro-Strange digital ads, direct mail pieces, and get-out-the-vote phone calls between now and next week’s vote, a spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed News.

“From repealing Obamacare to building the wall, Luther Strange is a proven ally in the U.S. Senate who’s working with our president to make America great again,” the spokesperson, Erin Montgomery, wrote in an email that referenced the Trump campaign slogan. “We at America First are proud to continue to support him ahead of the September 26 runoff.”

The last-minute assistance comes as Strange, who was appointed earlier this year to the seat previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, faces a tough fight from Roy Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Moore finished first in last month’s primary, has been leading in recent polls, and is presenting himself as the candidate friendliest to Trump and his agenda. He also has received help from a key Trump ally: former chief White House strategist Steve Bannon, who is using his perch at Breitbart to boost Moore.

But Trump announced on Twitter over the weekend that he planned to attend a Saturday rally for Strange in Huntsville. (The event actually is scheduled for Friday, according to an advisory the Strange campaign sent Monday.) And Politico, citing unidentified sources, reported that Vice President Mike Pence will hold a get-out-the-vote-rally for Strange next Monday in the state.

Trump’s reinforcement of support — he endorsed Strange in last month’s primary — has been a bit of a surprise, given the polling trends in the race. Trump had done little since the primary, and his silence was interpreted as a sign that he didn’t want to tie himself too closely to Strange in the event of a loss. A week ago, those close to the White House spoke of the race pessimistically and doubted that Trump would do any more on Strange’s behalf.

Aligning with Strange also puts Trump in a unique position: on the side of the GOP establishment. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his allies are heavily invested in Strange’s bid.

Now Trump and Pence, having agreed to spend more time on Strange, risk political embarrassment if Moore prevails. So it makes sense that America First, which exists in part to provide cover for the White House’s political moves, is spending more money.

“I think they feel it’s winnable,” a source familiar with America First’s plans told BuzzFeed News when asked what changed between last week and this week.

15 Awful Truths About ‘Twilight Sleep’ That Will Make You Glad Mothers Don’t Do This Anymore

Believe it or not, from 1914 all the way up to the 1960’s, it was common practice to heavily sedate laboring women right before they delivered their babies.

“Twilight sleep’ became wildly popular with the feminist movement in America after two journalists reported on the procedure in a popular woman’t magazine.

It appeared to be a way for women to “take control of labor,” and as the demand for ‘twilight sleep’ escalated, hospitals and doctors rushed to put the risky procedure into practice…

One of the drugs used to relieve a woman of the pain of birth actually erased her memory of the whole process.

The drug was called scopolamine and it comes from the deadly nightshade plant. It causes the user to become semi-conscious and gives them a form of amnesia.

The same drug that erased their memory also caused horrible flashbacks. Bits and pieces of the traumatic events would often come back to them – sometimes years later….

11 Childhood Friendships That Made It To Hollywood

To make it to Hollywood is an incredible feat. It’s rare that you or one of your friends becomes a major celebrity. But can you imagine if you and your best friend became a Hollywood star? How crazy would that be?

Take a look at some of the celebrities you never knew were childhood friends.

These two mega-stars used to go to auditions together when they were kids. DiCaprio recalls wanting to be friends with Maguire so badly, he yelled at him from across a Hollywood lot asking for his phone number.

The Lord of the Rings star and Home Alone cutie appeared in the 1993 thrilled The Good Son and even keep in touch to this day. Despite everything Culkin has gone through, it’s nice to know he still has true friends.

Before she was Rachel on Friends, Aniston was a student at LaGuardia High School in New York. Cher’s son (then daughter) Chaz Bono (then Chastity Bono) also attended the school, and together they would often hang out at the Cher household!

2 Former Popes Performed Exorcisms Inside The Vatican

“When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism” – Catechism of the Catholic Church

When you hear or read the word exorcism, what comes to mind? Most of you likely imagined Linda Blair’s rotating head spewing forth a fountain of pea soup. The story of two clergy men going forth to do battle with the devil with the soul of a little girl at stake is quite “romantic”. How could there ever be more at stake than when one’s immortal soul is on the line?

Hindustan Times

Unfortunately for those set on thinking that when an exorcism is performed, it is done as such in The Exorcist, that isn’t the case. It is not a Wild West showdown, but rather a specific, step-by-step procedure that exorcists must follow in order to expel demons from the possessed’s body.

13 Products In Your Medicine Cabinet That Do Absolutely Nothing

Odds are you pick up at least a few of the items on this list every month. But you’re better off saving your money, because none of these products do what they claim on the tin:

Even if you’re not the kind of person who obsesses over your skin, these products are considered a “must buy.” But while it feels satisfying to peel one of these strips off your nose, it’s not actually doing much for your skin.

The black “gunk” on the strip is called sebaceous filaments, and while they look nasty they’re mostly harmless. Plus, they’ll be back just a few hours after you use the strip. You might as well flush these strips down the toilet, because it would have the same effect on your pores.

Fixing the damaged ends of your hair is the Holy Grail of shampoo and hair product ads, but it’s just a marketing ploy. The only thing that can really get rid of split ends is a trip to the hairdresser. Products that supposedly fix your hair can actually make it worse by damaging the ends even more.

I bet you’ve seen ads for these products on late night TV and wondered “do they really work?” Nope. They claim to pull toxins out of your feet, and say that you know it’s working because the water in the basin turns murky.

But a chemistry professor from Rice University told the LA Times that this dirty water “didn’t show any traces of heavy metals or industrial chemicals other than a few chunks of rust that may have flaked off the electrodes.”

The makers of these foot massagers are “saying things that sound good, but they have absolutely no validity on this planet,” he warns.

The Environmental Working Group did a massive study of over 900 different sunscreen products, and uncovered some shocking results. The group found that 3/4 of sunscreens don’t protect you as well as they claim on the bottle.

Separate research by Consumer Reports found that almost 40% of suntan lotions are half as strong as they claim to be. You can check if your brand is lying to you here, and look for brands that say they meet clinical guidelines for their SPF.

Cellulite happens in 85-98% of women, and research shows that factors like diet, exercise, hormones and genetic factors play a big part in the condition. Basically, cellulite is a “you have it or you don’t” type of skin condition. But there are still lots of products that claim to treat it!

Doctors still say the best “treatment” for cellulite is diet and exercise, but it’s also true that in your case it could be impossible to remove, so don’t waste money on any expensive creams.

There are other skincare products to watch out for as well…

The Problem That Affects 750 Million People Has Met Its Match

There are many global issues that affect the world today, and we hear about them daily in the news or around the water cooler. There’s no doubt that things like crime, poverty, and other large social issues are worth conversation, but there’s one global issue that’s never talked about: illiteracy.

If you’re reading this than you should know just how important literacy is. Reading and writing open up new doors, not just for the imagination, but also for jobs or basic human interaction. The scale of illiteracy is staggering, with over 750 million people affected around the world, including millions in America.

Project Literacy

Project Literacy aims to change all that.

Founded by Pearson, a company devoted to helping people around the world learn, Project Literacy aims to create partnerships and move together to combat illiteracy.

You may think that you’ve never met anyone who was unable to read or write, but many people with illiteracy are very good at hiding their struggles; like Wanda Steward.

Wanda dropped out of school in the 10th Grade after years of trying to hide her inability to read and write. She did all the normal things people do, got a job, went to work, had kids, but still her illiteracy kept her apart from the rest of the world.

Project Literacy

She joined Project Literacy last year, and explained how she struggled to head bedtime stories to her children when they were young. She’d make up her own instead, based on the pictures she was seeing.

After a year of working with Project Literacy, Wanda can now read and write, she’s even written her own Children’s book: The Little Chicken Named Pong-Pong.

Wanda is using her story to help the almost 1 billion other people who are illiterate, and Hollywood is getting in on the action too.

Kenny Chesney Rescues Stranded Teens After Hurricane Irma

Residents of Florida, Texas and the Caribbean are trying to mend their lives after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma ravaged through their communities, destroying almost everything in their path.

Last week, country singer Kenny Chesney penned a heartfelt note and shared some photos revealing that his home as well as those of many people he knew in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands were destroyed. He vowed to help those affected by the catastrophe rebuild through his foundation, Love for Love City.

“I’m gonna do everything that I possibly can to try to relieve some stress from people that I’ve really grown to love over the years, who have meant so much to my life. This place, these islands, have meant so much to me,” Chesney told People.

Mere days after announcing the launch of his new foundation, Chesney is once again making headlines for a selfless act that saved two teenage boys in the aftermath of the storm.

Bodybuilder Dad Bursts Into Tears When He Realizes What His Family Got Him

Technology is so advanced nowadays that it sometimes seems like pure magic.

We’ve shared stories about the incredible Enchroma glasses before, but they always manage to impress us. The glasses are specially designed to correct color blindness. Putting them on is like the classic scene in The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy’s drab Kansas suddenly turns into the colorful Oz.

This “before and after” represents the change that Enchroma glasses make for a color blind person.

For patients who have spent their entire lives only seeing a handful of the world’s beautiful colors, putting on the glasses can be life-changing, and there’s no shortage of heartwarming videos featuring the sweet reactions of new Enchroma owners. Seriously, try not to cry when you watch this video:

While Enchroma is revolutionary, it can also be too expensive for some patients. The most basic model of Enchroma sunglasses will cost you at least $300, but it’s worth the price if these glasses will change someone’s life.

That’s exactly what they did for William Reed, and his sweet reaction is going viral.

More Than Seven Lawyers Working On Michael Flynn’s Defense Team

Michael Flynn’s family has set up a legal defense fund and is now soliciting donations as multiple investigations scrutinize the actions of the former Trump national security adviser.

The family is setting up the fund because “[t]he enormous expense of attorneys’ fees and other related expenses far exceed their ability to pay,” according to a statement from Joe Flynn and Barbara Redgate, Flynn’s brother and sister, respectively.

A source familiar with his legal representation said Flynn’s “core team” is seven attorneys from Covington — including partners, counsel, and associates — with “numerous” others involved at certain points. The fees will “certainly be into the seven figures,” according to the source.

Flynn, who played key roles in Trump’s campaign and is a retired Army lieutenant general, has been under scrutiny in the various investigations relating to Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 election, including special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Flynn tweeted out the news about the legal defense fund first thing Monday.

“The costs of legal representation associated with responding to the multiple investigations that have arisen in the wake of the 2016 election place a great burden on Mike and his family,” the website reads. “They are deeply grateful for considering a donation to help pay expenses relating to his legal representation.”

Flynn’s personal business dealings and his actions during the Trump transition have been an enormous source of coverage. There have been questions about foreign payments to Flynn, as well as other Flynn meetings with foreign officials.

Flynn turned over more than 600 pages of documents to congressional investigators in June in connection with their investigations. He has not, however, personally testified — earlier citing fear of prosecution.

In addition to Robert Kelner, the Covington partner who has been Flynn’s lead counsel throughout the investigations, the primary attorneys representing Flynn include partner Stephen P. Anthony and counsel Brian D. Smith. Anthony is a white-collar criminal trial lawyer who previously worked in the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section. Smith, a former lawyer in the Clinton White House counsel’s office, currently advises clients on investigations — including matters involving the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The three of them have signed various congressional correspondence, the source told BuzzFeed News.

In addition to the core team, “numerous” other Covington attorneys have been involved from time to time — when documents have needed to be reviewed, for example — the source told BuzzFeed News.

People Are Praising Nicole Kidman For Shining Light on An Overlooked Issue

There was a lot of talk about Nicole Kidman after Sunday’s Emmy Awards. Not only was the actress among the best dressed, she took home her first Emmy, and delivered a powerful and much-talked about acceptance speech.

The actress’s poignant portrayal of Celeste Wright, a woman who is abused by her husband, in HBO’s Big Little Lies, earned her the award for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie. While receiving the award, Kidman made sure to use her time on stage to shine a light on a very important topic.

Kidman started her acceptance speech thanking her husband Keith Urban and her children.

“I have a huge artistic family who supported me throughout all my ups and downs,” she said. “You have been so loyal to me throughout my whole life thank you for that.”

“So this is yours. I just want my two little girls to have this on their shelf and to look at it and go, ‘Every time my mumma didn’t put me to bed it’s because of this — (at least) I got something!’”

While the first part of her speech was sentimental, it was the second part that stuck out the most.

Marathon Mom Has The Perfect Response After She Was Shamed For Parking Her Car

One of the first lessons we’re taught growing up, is not to judge a book by its cover. While it may be human nature to be critical of one another, we can often find people staring or judging before they know the full story.

This mom’s keen eye caught a man taking a picture of her van while she was parked at her local Target store.

Alethea Mshar is an athletic mom. Her car is proof of that with stickers pasting her accomplishments, including a recent half marathon and a 25K, covering the backside of her van. These aren’t the only signs decorating her windows, however, she also has a handicapped sign hanging from her rear-view mirror. This clearly resonated with a passerby who stopped to capture the ironic nature of what he was seeing.

In response to the man’s actions, Mshar wrote an open letter to help shed some light on some things someone may not consider when looking at the situation at face value.

She starts off my admitting what the stranger probably saw before she got back to her car.

“Yes, my van has running stickers on it, and yes, it’s an ironic picture, seeing my 13.1 and 25k stickers on a vehicle in a disabled spot, I get why you took the picture. The playful side of me actually hopes you and your friends got a few laughs out of the picture,” she starts.

And that’s when the truth of the matter hits home.

“But I hope you noticed my child when we exited the store. He was sitting in the cart even though he’s far too big. That’s because my child is the person the placard is for.  My guess is that the possibility hadn’t even occurred to you.  And that’s why I’m writing this,” she writes.

Dad Pens Emotional Letter To Parents Of Other Kids – “Please Educate Your Children”

6 Final Resting Places That Became Tourist Traps

Grave sites are holy places where we pay respects to those whom we have loved and lost. But for some people, visiting the graves of people that they have never met is considered a pilgrimage of sorts, especially when it comes to celebrity grave sites. Here are five of the most visited grave sites in the world.

“Old blue eyes” was one of the most polarizing figures in entertainment, ever. His grandiose showmanship, his attitude and personal presence, his alleged ties to organized crime, and his passion for the opposite sex made him a true entertainment icon.

He is buried in Palm Springs, California, alongside a bottle of Jack Daniels and a pack of Camel cigarettes. His epitaph speaks volumes to the way he looked at life, “The Best Is Yet To Come”. Thousands of people visit his grave each year in order to pay homage to one of the best to ever do it.

Princess Diana was the people’s princess, and I could think of no better place to find her final resting place. She was interred on her family’s property in Althorp, North Hampshire, on Round Oval Island, in the middle of a small lake on the family land.

Her urn can be seen from the shore surrounding the island, and people are allowed to visit the site between July and September, but no one is allowed to step foot on the island itself. Four black swans live on the island and patrol the waters as beautiful sentries.

Samuel L. Clemens, or as is much more widely known, Mark Twain, is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York. Twain is famous for writing what is considered to be the quintessential American novel, Huckleberry Finn.

Thomas Henegar, the person responsible for overseeing Woodlawn Cemetery says that he would guess that nearly 3000 people come through the gates for a chance to pay their respects to, quite likely, the greatest American writer of all time.

This Chocolate Can Literally Make You Look Younger

Most of us don’t eat chocolate for the health benefits, mainly because there aren’t a lot of them. Dark chocolate can be healthy in small quantities, but more often than not, chocolate is seen as something that will ruin your skin, not fix it.

Recently, the world was introduced to ruby chocolate, which is the first new type of chocolate created in 80 years.

“We don’t add flavorings, we don’t add coloring, or additives: it’s purely coming out of this bean, and its all natural,” Peter Boone, chief innovation and quality officer for Barry Callebaut said. “It’s a dedication to years of research into the artisanal processes of making chocolate. But it was also luck that we found this potential in the bean 13 years ago.”

And if you thought that was exciting, then you’ll LOVE Estechoc, which boasts itself as both candy and skin care.

So how can a piece of chocolate really help your complexion?

Police Asked Him To Go On Air, He Had No Idea He Was About To Set Himself Up For Murder

It was the kind of tragic story we see on the news all the time: a missing woman’s family asking for her safe return at a press conference.

The woman’s name was Laura Wallen, and she was a 31-year-old social studies teacher from Olney, Maryland who was four months pregnant when she disappeared. While she had been buying supplies and was excited to meet her new class, Wallen didn’t show up for the first day of school. Soon, she was listed as a Missing Person.

To help bring Wallen home safely, the local police department arranged for her parents and her boyfriend Tyler Tessier, 32, to make an emotional appeal at a live press conference. On stage, Tyler told his missing girlfriend “There is nothing we can’t fix together — myself and your family. We are just looking or praying that you are safe.”

But what happened next puzzled people watching the conference on live TV. A reporter asked Tessier what his last conversation with Wallen before her disappearance was about. He simply replied “I don’t know where she is, that’s all.”

His strange answer made the people of Olney suspicious, and many suspected that Tessier knew more than he was letting on. But in a surprising twist, police actually suspected the boyfriend from the start, and the press conference was actually a sting.

So what happened to Laura Wallen?

Toys R Us Is Preparing For Bankruptcy, Possibly Before Christmas

With more than 1,600 stores worldwide, no one ever considered that Toys R Us was in jeopardy. From baby registries to toddler shopping sprees and children’s birthday parties, it feels like a stop into the giant toy store is inevitable for most parents.

So it comes as somewhat of a shock that the baby and toy retailer is in financial trouble. Sources says that Toys R Us could make the move into possible bankruptcy in the next few weeks after suppliers have tightened terms ahead of the holiday season.

Toys R Us has around $5 billion in debt and the company is working on a loan as part of its bankruptcy filing to assure vendors that they can pay for the toys stocking store shelves.

It’s no surprise that big box retailers are struggling because of the shift to online merchants like Amazon and Walmart. With more than a dozen significant retail bankruptcies this year, still no one was expecting it to come from the iconic toy store.

Penny-pinching parents are using online retailer’s Amazon Family service to save 20% off regular deliveries of diapers, along with other lucrative offers for baby supplies. Walmart is also leading the way in voice-activated shopping which aids parents with small children to shop easily, with their busy schedules.
