NBA Star Reveals His Secret Battle With Anxiety In Powerful Essay

After more than a decade in the NBA, Kevin Love has earned a reputation as one of the league’s toughest players.

So when a mysterious injury forced him to leave a game at half time last year, fans of his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, were concerned.

When Love left at halftime again a few months later – still with no explanation – they were even more worried.

Now, Love has finally revealed that he was suffering in silence from a condition most pro athletes will never discuss: panic attacks.

The pro basketball player says his attack last November was so severe that he had trouble breathing, and had to be hospitalized.

While panic attacks have received more attention lately, and were even featured on the hit show This Is Us, they’re still a taboo subject for many people.

Especially among athletes, who pride themselves on being almost invincible.

But Love isn’t afraid to discuss his vulnerability, and wrote openly about his struggle with anxiety in a recent essay for The Player’s Tribune.

Kevin LoveAP

“It came out of nowhere,” Love wrote about his first panic attack. “I’d never had one before. I didn’t even know if they were real.”

But by the next day, Love knew that a panic attack was “as real as a broken hand or a sprained ankle.”

While he says he’s learning to cope with his anxiety through therapy, Love wants to start a conversation about mental health for other men.

“If you’re suffering silently like I was, then you know how it can feel like nobody really gets it,” he wrote.

But Love isn’t the only celebrity sharing his personal story about mental health issues.

Your Hair Color Can Have A Serious Effect On Your Mental Health

Personally, I have never met a Ginger I haven’t liked. This could be due to the fact that less than 2% of the world’s populations has red hair, so realistically I haven’t met that many to dislike.

It could also just be that every redhead is just that awesome, who knows.

Unfortunately for our redheaded friends, they are thought to be more susceptible to mental illness than the rest of us are.

How could a hair color make you more likely to become mentally ill? There is a reason for this that doesn’t directly have to do with their hair.

When I was growing up, I clearly remember the “Kick a Ginger Day” at school. This was one day a year that people would literally go around and kick a redhead, and I never actually knew where this cruel tradition came from.

Aside from that, people have always been known to make fun of redheads and pick on them for their hair color, freckles, and pale complexion. I also remember the unfortunate stereotype that “Gingers have no souls.”

Like previously stated, redheads are only 2% of the population, a statistic that is constantly decreasing. We know that people like to make fun of people that are different from them, so because of this redheads are more likely to be bullied.

It could just be me, but I clearly remember the redheads in my class getting picked on by bullies constantly.

There was even a study done proving this theory…

Selena Gomez Sought Treatment In New York City

After a stressful year, Selena Gomez is now putting her health first.

Last summer, the “Perfect” singer underwent a kidney transplant thanks to her longtime friend, Francia Raisa, becoming her organ donor.

Since then, she has been candid about her struggles with mental health and the challenges she has faced growing up as a child star.

“It’s a lonely journey to really figure out where all this stuff is coming from. And to detach from it. It becomes an addiction, it becomes a habit, retraining your mind to not go to these negative places when you say something wrong, do something wrong, when you wear a certain thing or represent a certain culture,” she told The Business of Fashion last year about trying to stay positive and healthy. “But it is lonely, I had to lose a lot of people in my life to get there.”

In August 2016, Gomez announced that she was stepping away from the spotlight to “focus on maintaining my health and happiness” after suffering from “anxiety, panic attacks and depression” as side effects of her lupus.

“I think it’s safe to say that all of you know my life whether I like it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside,” she shared on stage at the American Music Awards. “I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down. If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken.”

Sources confirm at the time that her break was not a result of alcohol or substance abuse. Sources later confirm that she was seeking professional help to work on her emotional health.

In December, sources shared that Gomez was not currently speaking to her mother Mandy Teefey.

“After all the noise that happened over the holidays, she felt like she needed this,” says the source of her recent health situation.

Kate Middleton Opens Up About Mental Health

Despite being six months pregnant with her third child, Kate Middleton is making time to spread awareness to a cause close to her heart.

The Duchess of Cambridge showed off her growing baby bump when she arrived at Roe Green Junior School in London on January 22. She was greeted by more than 100 students and teachers before taking part in a lesson designed to help support the mental health of their students.

According to the Daily Mirror, Middleton has helped launch a website dedicated to giving teachers practical resources to help support their students’s mental health.

The website, called Mentally Healthy Schools, is funded by The Royal Foundation, and is expected to become available to elementary schools across England in the spring. While the website still needs to be monitored and reviewed, it has so far been trialed at 50 schools to great success.

Shockingly, more than half of mental health problems begin before an individual turns 14 years old.

This isn’t the first time Middleton has advocated to break the stigma surrounding mental health. With the help of husband Prince William and brother-in-law Prince Harry, Middleton created the Heads Together Campaign in partnership with eight leading mental health charities. The campaign aims to raise awareness and provide resources for those suffering from mental health problems.

While at the school, Middleton delivered a speech, inspiring both staff and students to shed the stigma surrounding mental health.

The Real Problem With Taking Your Phone Into The Bathroom

Some say we are addicted to our technology, but it’s all about finding a balance between reality and the online world.

If you own a smart phone, then you know how easy it is to organize your life, connect with people, and stay entertained at any point in the day. You can catch up with friends while in bed, listen to music on your way to work, and yes, even read this article on the toilet.

A lot of people have opinions on this, with some people saying it’s gross to touch your phone in the bathroom, others are very candid on the subject.

So what’s the verdict?

Well, it is true that you can pick up a lot of germs just by entering the bathroom, especially a public washroom. But if you don’t touch anything before picking up your phone is it okay?

Besides from dropping your expensive phone into the toilet, the biggest problem with using your mobile while immobile actually has to do with mental health.

Tow Truck Driver Saves Crying Woman From Committing Suicide On Highway Overpass

January and February are often considered some of the most depressing months of the year, and it’s easy to see why. The holidays have come and gone and everyone’s cheer has faded, leaving several months left of winter chill, short days, and for many people, more time away from their families.

Imgur

Winter can easily be one of the harshest times of year to live in if you’re in an area regularly affected by the snow and cold. Everything feels like a much bigger task to do thanks to the amount you need to bundle up, the often terrible driving conditions, and just how cold and hard to travel it is in the snow.

Marion Post Wolcott

This has even gotten to the point where mental health experts have diagnosed more and more people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, a disorder where people pre-disposed to depressive thoughts have them amplified by the season.

Access Health

While there are a wide variety of treatments available for many of the aforementioned conditions, unfortunately, many people who suffer from depression and anxiety still opt to suffer in silence. When combined with factors like SAD, it often leads to a notable increase in the number of suicides in January and February, meaning everyone needs to pay extra careful attention to those close to them.

It also results in situations like this one from Woodbridge, ON, Canada, when a tow truck driver happened upon a woman who was about to take her own life…

8 “Code Words” Your Kids Might Be Using To Tell You They Suffer From Anxiety

Kids aren’t the greatest communicators. It can be truly difficult for them to be able to tell us as parents what is really going on in their brains, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t subconsciously trying to tell us what is going on.

Kids do say the strangest things, and maybe it’s time that we looked back on our own childhoods, and started actually listening to what our kids had to say because we should all remember what it was like to be in their shoes.

An online mental health community was asked to share there own memories of what they used to say to their parents when they were dealing with internal issues, and here are some of the more potent answers that they gave.

Headaches are real, even though I really don’t remember getting them as a kid myself. If your kids are saying they have headaches all of the time, it’s time to seek a medical opinion. But if they are saying they have headaches during specific activities or time frames, there is likely another underlying cause, just listen to what they are saying. If the headaches are frequent, please seek medical attention for your child.

Children’s Primary Care Medical Group

If my children are to be used as a baseline assessment, kids have a ton of energy. And if yours regularly don’t, you need to figure out why. If you suspect something is physically or mentally causing them to be tired or lethargic, take them to see a medical professional as soon as possible, because sleep is important. Using the “I’m tired” excuse in order to get out of tasks or activities can be an early warning sign of something else going on.

Central Penn Parent

Isn’t it annoying when someone continually apologizes for something that they shouldn’t be sorry about (cough cough Canada)? Well how much could a child actually have to be sorry for if they are continually apologizing? Maybe it’s their way of coping, or maybe something else is going on behind the scenes that you need to be paying attention to.

Anytime someone asks you this question (especially a child) and it has nothing to do with their physical health, you need to take notice and try and figure out what is going on. Do a little digging on your own because kids aren’t going to be able to tell you exactly what is going on with them.

Katy Perry Shares The Heartbreaking Reason Why She Cut Her Hair

There’s no doubt that Katy Perry’s life has been a roller coaster ride over the last year. From who’s she’s dating, to who she’s feuding with, or what she’s going through, it seems like nothing can slow the pop singer down.

The “Wide Awake” singer explained the meaning behind her drastic haircut in an intimate therapy session that aired live on her YouTube channel.

Perry rose to mainstream success after singing in church during her childhood. She initially pursued a career in gospel music, before becoming one of the best-selling artists of all time. She has sold over 100 million records globally throughout her career so far.

All of this success in the music industry hasn’t prevented this music icon from her own dark thoughts.

Katy Perry live-streamed every single moment of her entire weekend on her YouTube channel to help build up hype for her new album, Witness. During the 100-hour long broadcast, we got to watch the pop singer sleep, cook, and eat. There were also some emotional moments, including during a therapy session with family therapist Dr. Siri Singh.

It was here that we got an intimate look at what the “Teenage Dream” singer was really facing when she wasn’t on stage.

New Technology That Lets Patients Hear Their Own Brainwaves May Cure PTSD

For those that suffer from it, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can be one of the singularly most debilitating things imaginable. Brought about by surviving traumatic events (hence the title), some of the earliest research into the phenomenon is what gave us the diagnosis of “shell-shock” within soldiers, dating all the way back to as early as the First World War.

HealthyPlace

As we’ve studied the disorder more and more over the last few years, we’ve learned that it can affect a number of victims, from people who’ve suffered sexual assault, traffic collisions, and other threats on their lives. The results are often mentally crippling, and can cause people who suffer from PTSD to constantly experience a sudden onrush of a “fight-or-flight” feeling when no danger is actually present.

ZME Science

It’s estimated that nearly 9% of U.S. citizens develop PTSD at some point, and that number’s only expected to climb. However, researchers think they might have actually found a treatment for it, and strangely enough, the solution is to listen to your brain. Literally.

Health Officials Issue New Warning About Cellphones That Reveals Just How Dangerous They Really Are

We are all guilty of doing it, but apparently it’s something that is a lot more harmful than we thought. Keeping your phone in your bed is convenient, but the benefits do not outweigh the risks. Even though you think you are just answering emails or playing games late into the night, you are actually increasing your risks for cancer, reproductive issues and even damaging your mental health.

How is this possible if it’s just a little phone? Well, research has shown that keeping your phone within an arms distance away while you sleep actually exposes you to radiation. This exposure comes from your cell phone transmitting low frequency radio signals.

The evidence mounting against the phones will make you a little bit more unsure about keeping your phone under your pillow. The California Department of Health is warning people that these radio frequencies are not only dangerous for you, but it actually can hurt your kids as well. Here’s how it’s harming your children and grandchildren…

Michael Phelps Opens Up About Struggle With Depression And The Times He ” Didn’t Want To Be Alive”

While you may know him as the most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps hasn’t always felt like he was deserving of all the attention. He has opened up about his struggle with depression, and how bad it really was.

“I can tell you I’ve probably had at least half a dozen depression spells that I’ve gone through. And the one in 2014, I didn’t want to be alive,” Phelps said in an interview with TODAY.

In 2014, Phelps was dealing with the fallout of a DUI arrest, which resulted in him being suspended from the USA Swimming Organization for six months. He took it hard, locking himself inside of his bedroom for four days, but he has revealed what helped him push through.

“But going through my all-time low, you know, kind of seeing where I was and then seeing what I have now, I’m so thankful for my family and friends around me who were able to help me and were able to communicate with me,” Phelps said.

Phelps shared some of the details about his struggle in the interview, including how he ended up letting it build up so much that he completely shut himself off from his family for days…

‘Young And The Restless’ Star Shares Update After Suicidal Crisis

Kristoff St. John, best known for playing Neil Winters on the long-running soap opera The Young and The Restless, has been dealing with some heavy personal issues over the last few years.

St. John lost his 24-year-old son, Julian, in 2014 after he committed suicide while getting treatment at a hospital in Long Beach, California.

EURweb

Following Julian’s untimely passing, the grieving father filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the hospital for failing to protect his son, who battled schizophrenia and was considered a high risk patient.

Since then, St. John and his ex-wife, Mia, have been trying to raise awareness for mental health, and they have also taken to social media on a few occasions to share tributes and celebrate Julian’s short life.

Despite the amount of time that has passed, and all the sweet tributes, St. John has struggled to come to terms with his loss. In an interview with ET Online, the actor said that he was “still angry.”

Unfortunately, St. John’s anger and pain forced him to take some drastic measures, and this past October, TMZ reported that the Emmy Award-winning actor was transported to a hospital after he allegedly threatened to kill himself.

TMZ

According to the reports, the actor had allegedly threatened to commit suicide with a gun just a month shy of the anniversary of his son’s death. St. John allegedly sent photos of himself holding a gun to his head to a former lover, who then alerted the cops.

Police confiscated two guns from the actor and took to him to a hospital, where he was to be held under a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation.

At the time neither St John nor any of the parties involved have commented on the situation, but now, the actor himself has finally shared an update on his health.

Her Dad Tried To Kill Himself, Her Words To Him Have Touched The Lives Of Thousands

It’s estimated that one in four people in the world will be affected by a form of mental illness at some point in their lives.

Although many Western countries are working to detach the stigma associated with mental illnesses, particularly depression, there’s still a long way to go.

Ellie Wilkie from Scotland was heartbroken to see her dad go through a bad bout of depression after the passing of his eldest brother, Jordan, who died from suicide in 2014.

“In January my dad attempted suicide in the family home. The effect was devastating, but luckily for us he survived,” Ellie wrote. “The emotions towards my dad were mixed. I resented him for wanting to leave me and my three sisters behind, but at the same time I was devastated thinking about how low he must be.

She thought she lost her dad that day, but Brian Wilkie decided to turn his life around.

Her tribute to her father’s battle with mental illness is heartwarming, and the changes in her father’s life is inspiring thousands across the world.

Each Winnie The Pooh Character Was Written To Represent A Mental Illness, Which One Did You Relate To

My dad used to read me The Stories of Christopher Robin when I was a kid, my family happens to own a first edition copy of the book that gets passed down to successive generations. It is one of my fondest childhood memories, but I never clued in to what the meaning behind the characters throughout the stories were.

It appears that the characters all represent a different mental illness. Eyeore is obvious, but now that I really think about it, it all makes perfect sense. Let’s take a look at what is potentially bothering the rest of the residents of the Hundred Acre Wood.

It is pretty clear that Pooh Bear struggles with ADHD, among others, but severe ADHD appears to be the main concern. His scattered thoughts, disorganized lifestyle, randomness and constant forgetfulness all scream ADHD to me.

Oh My Disney

No matter how many Winnie the Pooh stories I read my kids, or the number of shows I watch with them, I can count the number of time I have seen Eyeore happy on one hand. He is always sad or depressed, and he is likely the saddest character in the history of children’s books. It is clear he suffers from severe depression.

Oh My Disney

The son of Kanga, Roo seems to display symptoms of being on the autism spectrum. Roo seems to operate on two opposite ends; sometimes he doesn’t pay attention to anything that is going on around him, and he ends up in somewhat dangerous situations. Other times he decides to sit quietly in his mom’s pouch, completely ignoring the world around him. This says potential autism to me.

Scientists Blame One Chemical For Everything That’s Wrong With Our Thoughts

Mental health is quickly becoming one of the most-discussed issues of the 21st Century. Whether it’s the rise in cases of clinical depression among youths, the lingering effects of PTSD in veterans and people who have experienced traumatic events, or even just the impact that different parenting styles have on a child emotionally, we’re slowly but surely beginning to understand the human brain a bit better.

Wikimedia

That being said, there are still a number of questions that remain out of our capability to answer, questions like: “What causes depression?”, “Why are some people more prone to mental illness than others?” and “What can be done to prevent these conditions from manifesting?”

OHS Insider

Plenty of research is being poured into the subject, as human lives are genuinely at stake because of many of these conditions. While it’s difficult to discover any definitive answers to these questions, a new study done by researchers at the University of Cambridge may have stumbled onto one of the biggest breakthroughs in some time…

‘Alaskan Bush People’ Star Reveals Her Mental Health Struggle In Emotional Post

The Brown family, best known for starring on Discovery’s reality show Alaskan Bush People, have had a trying few months.

Looper

During the premiere of the seventh season, the family revealed that Ami, the matriarch, was battling stage III lung cancer. The family, who lived in on an isolated island in rural Alaska, were forced to pack up and temporarily move to southern California so Ami can seek treatment.

A few weeks ago, “Alaskan Bush People Exposed,” a Facebook page with up-to-date insider information about the family, confirmed that Ami had completed a round of chemotherapy and “they are scheduled to start filming in a few weeks.” However, a more recent update revealed that the 53-year-old matriarch’s cancer has unfortunately progressed and she is scheduled to undergo a second round of chemo.

Alaska Dispatch

Ami’s daughter, Rain also confirmed the disheartening news through a post on Instagram.

“Sadly I can’t say how she is doing just yet, but we are all hopeful and faithful,” wrote Rain. “Thank you all so much for your support and love in this harsh time.”

The 14-year-old also opened up her secret mental health struggle in another Instagram post.

7 Brain Games That Will Keep Your Mind Sharp As A Tack

Most people would agree that playing mind games with your loved ones causes nothing but heartache.

However, playing these kind of mind games with yourself can actually strengthen your mind and even make you smarter!

Have you ever wanted to be ambidextrous? People who can use both hands equally well are known as ambidextrous.

If you aren’t naturally able to switch between both hands, learning how to use your non-dominant hand can result in increased brain activity.

Switch your computer mouse to the other side, start brushing your teeth and eating with your other hand. It can be tricky at first, but it will give your brain a great workout!

If you’ve never mastered the art of eating with chopsticks, this technique should definitely be on your list of brain-developing activities.

Teaching yourself how to eat mindfully not only helps you to focus on the details, but it also helps with digestion and calorie consumption.

This one should be done carefully – especially if you aren’t particularly good on your feet. Start by closing your eyes while you take a shower, or fold laundry.

This kind of activity forces your brain to use new neural pathways and stimulates your other senses such as touch and smell.

Obviously he will be incredible, just look at how natural he is with these little ones:

Princess Kate Launches PSA Addressing A Very Important Cause

Kate Middleton isn’t just a member of the royal family with great hair and style. Ever since marrying Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge has been using her newfound power to make an impact.

Just like her late mother-in-law Diana, Kate has been appointed patron of a variety of NGOs and charities and she’s been doing her best to successfully fulfill her role.

Along with the princes William and Harry, Kate has been a strong advocate for eliminating the stigma around mental health. Last year they spearheaded the Heads Together campaign to create conversation around the issue and help raise funds to improve treatment options.

HeadsTogether

Now, after weeks of shying away from the limelight, the patron of the mental health charity Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families is once again stepping in front of the camera to speak out about the importance of talking about feelings, no matter how big or small.

The candid PSA is a rare chance to hear a usually camera-shy Kate talk about a cause near and dear to her.
