5 Essential Things Every Pet Owner Needs To Give Their Best Furr-iends A Perfect Life

Owning a pet is basically the highlight of anyone’s life. They bring so much joy and happiness to any household, and they really don’t ask for much in return. They just need your love, a few belly rubs, and some tasty kibbles.

Even though they don’t really need much, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t spoil them. Every single dog and cat is a very good dog and cat, and they deserve a special treat for being so wonderful. They just want to spend time with you, and these amazing products can help you get the quality time with your pet that they deserve. Trust us, it’s what they really want.

Walks are probably the biggest highlight of a dog’s day. They spend a bunch of time in the house, waiting for you to come home that the moment you get them outside they can’t wait to explore the whole town. The problem is that eventually it gets dark. It’s hard for the cars to see your best friend.

It can be really dangerous to walk out at night, even when you’re on the sidewalk, because if your dog happens to get off leash and runs out into traffic, cars may not see them until it’s too late. If you want to keep them safe while also helping them look a lot more stylish, an LED collar is the way to go.

There are so many kinds of collars that will help your pooch make a statement, but honestly, it’s one of the smartest buys you will ever make for your dog and you’ll be happy you did it.

These types of leashes are great for dogs who pull because they help you use your entire body weight to control them as opposed to just your arm. It’s perfect for the person who wants to get a run in with their ultimate workout buddy.

It doesn’t just have to be for workouts though, stronger dogs do great with these types of leashes because it forces them to stay with you. The elastic leash is great because it’ll help prevent your dog from pulling so hard it chokes them, but you’ll still maintain enough control so that they don’t accidentally hurt themselves.

Those aren’t the only things your pet is begging you for…

Petition To Make Food Stamps Applicable To Pet Food Gaining Traction

Animal rights always need to be defended. The poor innocent creatures can’t fend for themselves, so it’s up to us to make sure they have the care and love they deserve. Recently, more and more legislation has been put in place to not only protect the animals, but also punish those who hurt them.

A number of United States jurisdictions implemented an animal offenders registry, which publicly reveals the names of known animal abusers in the area, similar to how sex offenders are registered.   Currently, Tennessee is the only state to have an animal offenders registry, but other cities like New York and Cook County, Illinois have them at a local level.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

In addition, Connecticut introduced a new animal advocacy program.

Eight volunteers, seven lawyers and one law professor along with her students, are part of an experimental system that will allow prosecutors and defenders to request an animal advocate for their cases. The hope is that the advocates will give animals a voice they wouldn’t otherwise have, and make animal cruelty charges more likely.

“Every state has the problem of overburdened courts that understandably prioritize human cases over animal cases in allocating resources,” said University of Connecticut professor Jessica Rubin, a specialist in animal law. “Here’s a way to help.”

The volunteers are considered an official part of the investigation and are able to conduct interviews with witnesses or professionals who are relevant to the case. This can save the prosecutor’s time and end up helping the case.

But now, people are signing a petition to allow a crucial financial service to extend to pets, and it’s a little controversial.

Science Finally Explains Your Dog’s Nastiest Habit

It’s the dirty little secret that all dog owners know, but wish they didn’t.

Some dogs just love to chow down on their own poop. And no matter what we do to stop them, it can seem like there’s no way to curb this gross behavior.

They look so innocent…but they love to gross you out.Loiter

While dog owners around the world have witnessed the behavior, vets and animal experts are still trying to figure out why our pets do it in the first place. A new survey may provide some answers, as well as sound advice on how to break your pet’s poop addiction.

The scoop on this bad behavior comes from the journal Veterinary Medicine and Science. Researchers compared two surveys: one of 3,000 dog owners, and a smaller group who say their dogs regularly eat poop.

The results aren’t for the faint of heart, but they are illuminating:

  • 60% of owners in the second survey say their dogs eat poop every day
  • The other 32% say they do it at least once a week
  • A dog’s age, sex, and training don’t seem to make a difference when it comes to this behavior

While the habit isn’t very dangerous, vets warn it has been known to cause diarrhea and other diseases.

Thankfully, the survey identifies the best way to prevent your dog from eating poop once and for all.

70-Year-Old Woman’s Dog Adoption Rejected Because She’s “Too Old”

The classic saying is that “an old dog can’t learn new tricks,” but we’ve never heard of a person too old to adopt a dog.

But that’s why a 70-year-old Wisconsin woman only identified as Mary says her adoption application for a homeless dog was rejected. Mary had seen a listing for a one-year-old Yorkie mix who was being fostered near her home.

The dog seemed like a perfect fit for Mary, who was looking for a small animal that could follow her on vacations around the world. But when she applied to adopt the dog, she was stunned by the animal shelter’s response.

Mary is 70 but says she’s not too old to adopt a dog.TMJ 4

The Fluffy Dog Rescue animal shelter explained that they have  “a philosophy of ‘adoption for life'” before adding “we feel there are other dogs that may be more suitable for you. In your case it would be a dog aged three or older.”

The decision was especially painful for Mary, who has been looking for a new companion since her husband passed away three years ago.

“I think they made a very poor judgment,” she told  TMJ4, “in the fact they don’t know me.”

Mary’s daughter Melissa called the decision “really upsetting.”TMJ4

Mary’s daughter Melissa fired back at the animal shelter in an e-mail, and now more animal rescue groups are weighing in on Fluffy Dog’s unusual decision.

Vets Warn The Dog Flu Is Deadly This Year – Here’s How To Protect Your Pet

Veterinarians are warning pet owners to watch out as America experiences a serious dog flu outbreak.

The dog flu, or canine influenza, has been identified in 46 states and even Canada, and animal experts worry pet owners don’t know enough about the condition.

Lake Mary MD

The disease has been common in Asia for years, but only spread to the United States from South Korea in 2015. Since then, there have been a number of large outbreaks, including when 1,000 dogs from the Chicago area caught the virus.

Jodie Strait, a dog show competitor whose pets caught the virus, called the disease “unreal.”

“It was the worst nightmare that could ever happen,” she remembered. “I went to a dog show with my dogs and I almost killed them.”

Until now, only owners like Strait who competed in large dog shows had to worry about the canine flu. But now the disease is spreading through the country’s kennels, dog parks, and from pooch to pooch.

Vets are warning owners to learn the signs of dog flu, and how to prevent your pet from catching it.

Here Are 6 Tips For Safely Handling Essential Oils Around Your Cats

You may have just received a brand new diffuser for Christmas, and probably can’t wait to try out all sorts of wonderful essential oils to scent your home. But cat owners should take caution, because these oils can seriously harm your feline friend if you are not careful.

Follow these six tips in order to create a relaxing, and healthy atmosphere for you and your cats!

Since diffusers cause the oil to spray into the air where it can enter you and your cat’s lungs, you want to make sure that what they are breathing in doesn’t put them in danger.

Two components in particular to watch out for include phenols and monoterpene hydrocarbons, but as a rule you should only be using pure essential oils.

This one should be obvious, but if your hands or clothing comes into direct contact with the essential oil, do not pet or cuddle with your cat until it has been properly cleaned off.

While toxic oils are useful for cleaning certain household items, take caution not to use it on anything your cat could reach or try and lick. Showerheads are okay, kitchen sinks are not.

Blind Cat Figures Out How To Ask For More Water

Cats are pretty good at letting you know when they need something. They’ll claw, meow, and knock things over just to get your attention. My cat knows exactly when she’s supposed to be fed, and she’s relentless until it happens. If she sees the bottom of her food dish, it’s game over.

Personal

For little Winnie, however, she can’t use her sight to tell when she needs things. Winnie was the runt of a litter, and when rescuers found her, they realized she was blind.

The Dodo

Winnie gets around pretty well, considering she can’t see anything. Her owner, Kristopher Smith, says the little cat can sometimes run into things, but other than that she’s pretty normal.

“She’s actually the best in the house at catching flies, and I’m not sure how,” Smith told The Dodo. “She meows normally but also has a chirp that she uses when she starts running around or when she gets excited, which makes me think she uses it almost like sonar or echolocation.”

Winnie quickly became a family favorite, and when her new mom had to have brain surgery, Smith snuck Winnie into the hospital to comfort her.

“I got the nurse to let me sneak Winnie into the ICU to visit her and she did amazing,” Smith said. “I would have never imagined a cat being easygoing in a situation like that, let alone a blind cat. She fell asleep on the hospital bed with her momma until we had to leave.”

The Dodo

Because of her setback, Winnie has had to find a different way than her animal siblings to communicate with her family.

Heroic Cat Took On A Deadly Rattlesnake To Save A Girl’s Life

Oreo the cat is down to just eight lives after rescuing his “big sister” from a deadly predator.

The fierce feline was raised by 10-year-old Jaiden Peterson from Orlando, Florida since he was a kitten. That gave the pair an unbreakable bond, and the cat is so close with Jaiden that her family used to call her Oreo’s “big sister.” But from now on, they’re calling Oreo her guardian angel.

“It’s not just Jaiden that has such a strong bond, although she is the closest,” her grandmother Cyndi Anderson told LoveMeow. “It’s the whole family. He seems to watch over everyone in strange, inexplicable ways, including the eleven-month-old human sister. He seems to be wise beyond his years.”

Cyndi Anderson

She also describes him as “loyal beyond loyal,” explaining that Oreo never lets Jaiden or her siblings out of his sight, and that he even sleeps next to her at night. In fact, Oreo is more like a guard dog than a pet cat, and that came in handy when an eastern diamondback rattlesnake crept up on Jaiden.

The young girl was playing outside with her siblings when she noticed Oreo was acting strange. That’s when her beloved pet stepped between her and the snake.

10 Animals Who Earn More Money In A Year Then You Will In Your Life

Forbes should seriously consider adding animals to their millionaires list, because there’s quite a few that have earned or inherited the big bucks and deserve some recognition.

These 10 animals have so much money, they literally don’t know what to do with it.

It’s nice to sound like you’re from royalty, but it’s best when you fit the part. Gunther III inherited an estimated $372 million from his owner, the German Countess Karlotta Lieberstein. Gunther IV now owns a villa in the Bahamas, a mansion in Miami (the one Madonna used to live in), and he eats caviar and steak.

This is probably the first time you envied a dog’s life.

Conchita the Chihuahua, also known as the “most pampered dog in the world,” had a $3 million trust fund. She wore pearls, designer clothes, had designer handbags, and slept in a custom-made pink racing car bed.

They aren’t pets nor are most of them worth millions, but being worth around $1 to $2 million is not bad…at all. Also, if they bring in a lot of tourism that ups their value.

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfield loves his cat A LOT. I mean, you have to love someone to give them two maids, publish a book about them, and pay millions of dollars in modeling fees so that he or she can live a lavish life. Oh, and Choupette has a net worth of $97 million.

If you’ve spent some time looking at cats on the internet, you’ve definitely come across Grumpy Cat. He has more than two million followers on Instagram, has a Christmas movie, has his own coffee brand. I mean, this cat is more famous than we’ll ever be! We’re not sure how much he’s worth, but he can’t be less than a multi-millionaire.

Keep going, these next animals are probably worth more than all your family members’s income combined.

This Year’s 100 Most Popular Dog Names Show We’re Not As Creative As We Think

For the fifth year in a row Rover, a social network for pet sitters and dog walkers, has unveiled their list of America’s 100 most popular dog names.

Defying the odds, classic dog names like Rover, Rex and Fifi didn’t make the top 10 this year, while new and unusual names like Tucker and Bailey are climbing the charts.

Principals Page

The biggest trend singled out by the website this year is the huge number of dogs with typical “human” names. Out of the top 20 dog names, 11 also made the list of 100 most popular baby names, and in total Rover says 44 percent of the most popular dog names work for humans as well.

Here are the 10 most popular names for boy dogs:

  1. Max
  2. Charlie
  3. Cooper
  4. Buddy
  5. Jack
  6. Rocky
  7. Oliver
  8. Bear
  9. Duke
  10. Tucker

While they didn’t reach the top of the list, pop culture names were very popular this year. Star Wars characters like Finn, Luke, Leia and Rey were common choices.

Game of Thrones character names like Khaleesi, Arya, Sansa and Jamie were also 12 percent more popular this year.

Meanwhile, when naming girl dogs, celebrities seemed to provide the most inspiration for pet owners.

20 Pet Owners Who Look Like The Human Version Of Their Animal

You’ve definitely noticed this before, whether you’re walking in a park or visiting a friend’s house, that pets tend to look like their owners. This resemblance could be attributed to similar facial structure, hair, eyes, facial expression, or body shape.

But why do people choose pets that look similar to themselves?

Experts believe this happens because we like to choose pets that better blend into our family. This process of choosing by familiarity is not uncommon, but there are some pets and their owners that look eerily similar.

Here are 20 hilarious photos of pets who look like the animal version of their owners.

20. The resemblance is uncanny.

10 Ways To Pet-Proof Your Christmas Tree

As the holiday season rolls around, we’re all starting to put up our decorations. For those of us with pets, it’s a constant struggle of making the house look nice while making sure your cat or dog won’t totally destroy it or make themselves sick.

While we can’t give you tips on every Christmas decoration you may have, we can give you some tips on keeping your tree upright.

Shared

This may seem obvious, but putting your tree in the right spot is extremely important. If you can put it in a room that can be easily closed-off to your pets, that’s a good option. If not, make sure you’re putting it somewhere away from shelves or other things the animals could use to climb into your tree.

Bored Panda

Make sure your tree is fastened to either the ceiling or a wall to prevent it from toppling over. It’s not only better for the tree, but it can prevent potential injuries to your pets if it were to fall on them.

Nuzzle

If you can’t tie your tree down, make sure it is heavy enough that it won’t fall. You can add sand bags to the base to weight it down, or just use a wide, sturdy base to begin with. The extra effort could save you many a headache in the future.

PetGuide

If you are using a live tree, you’ll have a water bowl to keep it hydrated. Though in theory it helps the tree, it doesn’t do a lot of good if the dog or cat drinks it all up. Make sure you somehow section off the water bowl, whether it be through boxes or a tree skirt that fits nice and snug around the trunk.

Man Overcomes Heartbreak And Allergies With The Help Of His Furry Rescuer

Stray cats are not an uncommon sight, unfortunately. Too often, cats are left to fend for themselves with no one to guard them. While this might be okay during the warmer months, winter is a whole other story.

The cats hardly seem to mind, however, as they get to roam around and see new people every day. It seems as though some of these strays do want to find a forever home, though, and that’s exactly what Socks set out to do.

Connor Manning spoke to The Dodo about his story with Socks, and how the loving cat chose her new home. Manning says he was walking home one night and was in a bad mood, dealing with a bad breakup. Socks appeared out of nowhere, and Manning decided to say hello. The stray cat jumped into Manning’s lap and demanded love and attention.

“After about five minutes, I started getting up to head home and she was SUPER scared,” Manning said. “So I crouched down and she ran right over to me again. And we repeated this process for about four blocks until we were on my porch.”

Socks came inside Manning’s house to explore a little bit before realizing the outdoors was more her style.

Manning had plans with a friend that night, but he decided to leave out a bed and some water for his new friend on the front porch, hoping she would choose to stay.

But when Manning came home, Socks wasn’t there.

If You Love Your Dogs, You’ll Stop Hugging Them

If you own a dog, puppy, or forever-a-puppy, then you know they are more than simply a pet, or animal that hangs around the house. They are a part of your family, and should therefore get the same love and respect for being part of your home unit.

This means that you want to show them the same affection you would a small child, but apparently the occasional pat on the head or belly rub is about as far as you should go to showing that care, for their sake.

Because even though our doting canines may appear to enjoy the embrace, often times it is more patience than enthusiasm.

“I’ve never seen a dog who — when you hug them — they stand up and wag their tail and they’re so excited.” says dog-cognition scientist Dr. Alexandra Horowitz. “They do something else. They deal with it, you know?”

Many dog owners have butted heads on this issue for a while now, and it’s understandable why they may have strong feelings on the subject. Everyone wants to show their dog love, especially since we can’t just tell them. But what is so bad with hugging?

5 Important Cold Weather Tips All Pet Owners Need To Know

Winter is a tough time for people with pets. Animals still want to gooutside, whether it’s to go to the bathroom or burn off all that excess energy, but the cold weather and snow makes it really difficult. How can you know when they are struggling with the temperature? What should we be doing to make it easier for them? Here’s everything you need to know to help your pet thrive this winter

The cold weather is a lot for us to handle, but imagine having to walk around in bare feet! Just because animals have fur, it doesn’t mean that they are completely immune to the cold. New laws have made it illegal to leave your pets outside, but temperature isn’t the only thing you need to worry about.

Snow, ice and rain can all attribute to dangerous conditions for pets and they should be protected when these things are going on. Also, keep in mind the age of your pet and any medical conditions they have because certain issues can be affected by temperature.

Cats and other wild animals that spend time unsupervised outside can get themselves into some dangerous situations. When you pull into a driveway and your engine is all warm and toasty, they might think it’s the perfect spot to curl up for a nap. If you don’t bang on the hood to give them some warning before your engine starts it could result in them getting very badly injured.

If you find your feet are getting dry, their feet are probably feeling dry as well. Keep an eye on the condition of their pads to make sure they aren’t getting cracked. There is a special wax you can use that will help them get moisturized and protect them from the salt. You can get it at most pet stores, on Amazon, or even make your own. It’s easy and will help keep your babies safe!

There are also some very important things to watch out for…

New Law In Place To Protect Animals Against People Who Leave Dogs Outside

Owning a dog is a huge responsibility. They need love, affection, and care, and for some reason some people aren’t aware of the best ways to take care of their pets. So often, we hear stories about people who abuse their animals, abandon them, or leave them unattended in vehicles, but now a lot of these stories will be a thing of the past.

With the weather turning colder, our canine companions need as much consideration as any other member of our family, and now there will be a law put in place to help make sure they get it.

The cold can be too much for us sometimes, so it makes sense that the same is true for dogs. Of course your dog needs to go outside to go to relieve itself, but the temperatures should be considered. Many people leave their dogs outside for hours on end, assuming they will be fine, but now those people will have to face legal consequences for their actions…

No One Wanted This “Twisted” Cat, But Shelter Refused To Give Up On Him

Ivan is a very special cat, who was looking for a very special home. His legs aren’t like other cats, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want love and affection like every other animal. He was surrendered to the shelter because his malformed legs make it difficult for him to get around, but no one was interested in adopting him. They knew they were going to have to really shine the spotlight on him so he could find the perfect home.

The shelter sent out a press release about Ivan, hoping that it would help raise awareness about this “super social” sweetheart. “Born without radial bones in his front legs, which are also missing two toes on each paw, and a deformed left hind leg, Ivan ‘army crawls’ his way around as walking is impossible,” the organization described. “Moreover, he is unable to use his litter box each and every time, making it all the more difficult to identify an adopter willing to take him in.”

“What Ivan lacks in mobility he more than makes up for in personality,” adoption center manager, Alyssa Krieger, said.  “His physical limitations will always be there—so we’re looking for the adopter who can see through that and give him the second chance he deserves.”

The shelter put out the call, hoping that at least one person would consider adopting him, but the response they got was overwhelming…

Mom Kicks Dog Out Of Bed, Dad Has The Best Response

When McKenna adopted a pug puppy, she was looking for a companion and a loving pet. She brought Violet home, to the dismay of her dad, and was ready to spend some quality time with the pupper.

“My dad was very not on board with getting a dog. It took about a week for him to fully accept,” McKenna told The Dodo.

However, as time went on, McKenna’s dad developed an unbreakable bond with Violet.

“There’s something about my dad that my dog loves more than the rest of us,” McKenna said. “So when he saw that he was her favorite, they became BFFs.”

Violet and Dad were practically inseparable, with the puppy even sleeping in Mom and Dad’s bed every night. Otherwise, she had trouble sleeping all together. Mom has never really had an issue with it, until a stinky problem caused her to put her foot down.
