In my childhood home, our cupboards were stocked to the brim with canned San Marzano Tomatoes.

A staple in our household, my mother used this brand in all of her famous tomato-esque recipes, including spaghetti, soup, and salsa to our family’s delight.

Imported all the way from the base of Mount Vesuvius in Italy, these plum tomatoes are grown “in rich volcanic soil.” They taste sweet and tangy, and are less acidic than their Roma counterparts. These particular tomatoes are so pristine, they’re the only kind used for a traditional Neapolitan pizza.

However, for tomatoes to be classified in the San Marzano brand, they must be grown in the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino region of Italy, and must have a Protected Designation of Origin (or better known as DOP) label on the packaging to symbolize its authenticity.

However, this is where things get tricky.

Unlike the Italy, the organic produce in the United States isn’t regulated, nor do they note the DOP markings either. This means that companies can slap on the label on any can of tomatoes and say they’re authentic San Marzano products.

But, how many of these canned tomatoes are real? Well, back in 2011 the President of Consorzio San Marzano told Italian importing company, Gustiamo, that 95% of the canned tomatoes sold in America are fake.

So, now that you know there are an overwhelming amount of knockoffs how can you tell if your canned San Marzano Tomatoes are authentic?

Ginger works by improving your circulation. It does this by lowering your blood pressure and thinning the blood. The other day I was wearing a relatively new pair of dark wash jeans at work when all of a sudden I looked at my hands and they were blue. Although it is good to get into a regular and frequent cleaning routine, we shouldn’t be over-doing it. There are some things around the house that we need to hold off cleaning too frequently.

1. Your dog.

You’re probably washing your dog way too often. To avoid skin irritation, you should be washing you dog ever two to four months, if they get smelly in between washes, you can rinse them to remove dirt. If you feel bad waiting that long in between washes, don’t! Your dogs skin is not like yours, and might get irritated by too many washes, and if it was up to them, you would never wash them.

2. Your comforter.

There is a lot of speculation around how often you should wash your bedding. Although you should wash your sheets and pillow cases about once a week, your comforter does not need to be washed this often. You can wash your comforter every couple months, since it doesn’t come in contact with your skin as much as the rest of your bedding.

3. Your hair.

You have probably heard by now that you shouldn’t wash your hair everyday. This is because your hair needs oils in it to be healthy. Although it varies for everyone for how long they can go, no one should wash their hair everyday, it dries it out.

4. Jackets.

Unless your jacket has visible dirt on it or smells bad, you can wash it just every three months. It only needs to be washed every so often because it doesn’t come into contact with your body oils like your other clothes do.

I have grown up thinking I was an expert for having a bunch of money saving habits. It wasn’t until now that I realized I am actually losing money by doing them! Here are six money saving tips that might actually be losing you money.

It’s common sense to turn off a light when you leave the room to save money on your electricity bill, but apparently it might be costing you more. If you use fluorescent lights (CFL’s) turning them off for less than 15 minutes, and turning them back on again will cost you more money than just leaving them on. So, if you plan to go back into that room within 15 minutes, keep the lights on.

Also, if you don’t already use florescent lights, you should probably switch. They use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer.

Couponing can be beneficial sometimes, but you need to take a step back and ask yourself how much your time is worth. Couponing can be a very long process, which can only save you a few dollars in the long-run. So is three hours of work really work five dollars in savings?

Also, you might end up spending money on things you wouldn’t usually buy, costing you even more money.

Even when our gas tank is filled, a lot of us, (including myself) give it a few extra pumps, so it’s really full. Apparently, those few last pumps actually just stay in the hose so you end up buying gas for the next customer.

Cancelling your credit cards is obviously better than doing too much spending on them, but it is best just to keep them in a drawer, than to actually cancel them. Cancelling your cards is bad for your credit because when you close an account, you lose the credit line attached to it.

This is bad because if you ever need a loan, banks will look at how much of your available credit you actually use. So, closing an account will lower your available credit and therefore make you look like you’re using a lot of your current credit.

It is best to have a few credit cards that are active but that you don’t use. This way your available credit will look huge compared to what you actually use.

Now that you’ve figured out what could be the root of your problems, it’s time to dig a little deeper and describe what it is about your situation that you don’t like. Pretend like you’re talking to your best friend and be specific, make it as clear as possible and do not hold back.

Your description should clearly explain how you feel about the situation, what you have been doing to try and remedy it, who and what else are involved and whether or not they’re contributing to the problem, how much time do you spend thinking about it, as well as the ways in which it has been affecting your day to day life.

Once you’ve figured out the bad, it’s time to start looking for a better situation.

Any sort of exposure to a loud environment can cause your ears to ring. This could be from working with heavy equipment or listening to really loud music. You won’t necessarily hear the ringing right away either. You may be more susceptible to constant ringing if you are around loud noises quite frequently.

To protect yourself from this happening, wear the proper ear protection while using loud machines, and always turn your music down. It should never be turned up all the way, especially while wearing headphones. Too much exposure to these loud noises without protection could do more damage than just ringing ears. Over time, you could experience hearing problems.

Stress can play a part in why your ears may be ringing. When you are stressed you’ll notice your ear ringing may seem even louder. So, stress isn’t the only factor but it can make things worse.

If you suffer from tinnitus, which is re-occurring ear ringing, counselling can actually reduce symptoms. In the meantime, don’t over-stress if your ears start to ring. Kick back, relax and you’ll see the symptoms diminish.

The reason your ears may be ringing can be due to bone growth. A hereditary disorder, called otosclerosis, causes bone in the middle ear to grow abnormally. This can lead to Tinnitus somewhere in your middle-age.

This is not a huge thing to worry about, as it can be treated by surgery. This isn’t a disorder that usually hides itself so you probably can tell you have it from early on, and get it treated from there.

Stains happen everyday and all stains come out differently. Some are okay to just throw in the washer, and when we put others in the wash, it will make the stain permanent. Here’s a list of ways to get every common stain out with products you have in your cupboard.

If the stain is on a carpet, it’s best to dab the stain to remove any wine that hasn’t been absorbed yet. You can use paper towels or a clean cloth. In a small bowl, pour two cups of warm water. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of dish washing liquid.

Do the same with clothing and wash it immediately after.

Gently wipe as much of the excess chocolate as you can, making sure not to to push the stain deeper into the fibers. Next, remove as much chocolate as you can using cold running water from the back of the stain. Soak in a solution of detergent and water for at least 30 minutes before washing as usual.

There are a few ways you can remove gum from clothing.

Lemon juice: This method is extremely cheap, and causes no damage to fabric. All you have to do is soak the garment in lemon juice and scrape the gum off with a hard edge. It will come off with this method but wash the clothing soon after doing this process.

Hairspray: Apply the hairspray directly onto the chewing gum and it will harden. Then just scrape the chewing gum off.

Vinegar: Soak the garment in hot vinegar, then brush or scrape the gum off gently with a blunt tool to avoid damaging the fabric.

Mayonnaise: Pour this onto the chewing gum and rub it in slowly. The gum should then peel off smoothly.

Church Group Doesn’t Leave A Tip, Then The Server Gets Fired

If you’ve ever worked as a server or anyone else who depends on tips to supplement your wages, then you know how frustrating it can be when customers either under tip or don’t tip at all. Servers make less than minimum wage with the assumption that their tips will make up the difference, but Tamlynn Yoder will tell you this isn’t always the case.

Yoder, a 25-year-old resident of Lake Park, Florida, learned the hard way that tipping isn’t guaranteed, but that you can’t just go off about it. Yoder worked at an Outback Steakouse when an order came in from Christ Fellowship church. The church ordered 25 steaks, 25 chickens, and 25 potatoes on a Wednesday morning for pickup.

“We take the order over the phone, we put the order together, take payment and then take order to the car,” Yoder said. “It’s a lot of work just as much as serving.”

The takeout order totaled $735, and when someone from Christ Fellowship came to pick up the order, that’s exactly how much money Yoder and her coworkers received. No tip was left, despite spending most of the day preparing the 75-item order. Yoder says she only ended up with $18 in tips for the entire day because Christ Fellowship placed such a large order and didn’t leave a gratuity.

“Tips [are] how we make our money, we still make a low wage as servers,” Yoder said.

But even though it’s not her fault that the church didn’t leave a tip, Yoder was still fired from her position at Outback the next day. That’s because it wasn’t the lack of tip that got the server fired, it was her complaints about it.

Take your dryer sheets outside of the laundry room and discreetly place them in areas of your house that tend to smell. They will absorb the bad odor and release a fresh smell. These aren’t the nicest decor to have laying around so ensure you place them so company can’t see them.

1. Vent

You shouldn’t feel ashamed that you had a bad day, and sometimes it helps to get all your thoughts out of your head. Give yourself 10 minutes to get it off your chest. If you have a friend or someone you love nearby, simply vent about how crappy your day was, this could make you feel better afterwards. If you don’t have someone nearby or you don’t want to share why your day went badly, write in a journal, it will have the same effect.

2. Do something for yourself

Do something nice for yourself. This could be anything from doing a little retail therapy, getting your hair done, or painting your nails. Do anything for yourself that might make you a little happier.

3. Surround yourself with good people

If you have anyone around that you can spend time with, (and actually enjoy it) do it! This can take your mind off of the bad day you just had and maybe have fun as well. It helps if it’s not a chore to hangout with this person, and if they can usually put a smile on your face.

So no, you are not getting one more wrinkle every time you use your phone, but overexposure to excessive blue light accelerates the oxidation process, which causes inflammation and damages the skin barrier, making it more prone to signs of aging, increased uneven skin tone, dullness, pigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Your phone can also cause pimples or breakouts. This happens because our phones are essentially dirtier than a public washroom. They are a magnet for bacteria, which all ends up on your skin when you take a phone call.

5 Ways To Prevent Cracked Heels Without Having To Go To The Spa

Dried and cracked heels can be one of the most frustrating and uncomfortable things to have. If you’re like me, then you probably thought the only way to really get rid of them is to spend way too much money getting a pedicure. Good news, there is ways you can get rid of cracked heels at home with stuff you probably already have lying around!

Usually the only problem with cracked heels is their appearance, but that shouldn’t stop us from seeking out remedies to have beautiful feet again.

Cracked heels are usually caused by dry skin. When weight and pressure are applied to the fat pad under the heel, the skin expands sideways. If the skin is lacking in moisture, it becomes stiff, less elastic, and prone to cracking. This is probably why your heels are the worst in the winter.

Moisturizers

You can buy specific moisturizers for your heels called heel balms. These balms contain ingredients to moisturize, soften, and exfoliate dead skin. They can usually be found at any drug store. If you don’t want to go out and buy anything, try using a thick moisturizer you have at home. Once you have your moisturizer, use it two to three times a day.

Soak

Soaking your feet causes the dead skin to soften. Whenever you have time, soak your feet in lukewarm, soapy water for up to 20 minutes. Once the skin is softened, use a loofah or foot scrubber to move the dead skin. (This process is really gross but weirdly satisfying.) If you have any Listerine laying around, you can combine it with warm water and create a foot bath. It sounds odd but the mouthwash can kill germs and moisturize dry skin.

Making eggs can sometimes be a huge pain. From the yolk breaking, to shells ending up in your breakfast, it seems like they are the biggest hassle ever.

Making breakfast doesn’t have to be that frustrating, here are hacks to make cooking eggs a breeze, no matter how you like them made!

This can honestly be the most frustrating part of the egg making process. How many times have we all had to go digging into the slimy mess to get that tiny part of the shell that decided to fly off when you cracked it?

1. Flat surfaces

Try cracking your eggs on a flat surface rather than on a corner of a bowl. Doing this will prevent tiny bits of the shell from breaking off and falling into the bowl.

2. Egg shell scoop

If you still get little pieces of the shell in the egg, use the egg shell to scoop it up. This will save you time and the sliminess getting on your fingers.

This will solve the constant dilemma of eating shells for breakfast.

Hard boiling eggs is an extremely painful process. Luckily there are some ways to make it easier.

1. Baking soda boil

When boiling them, put in a small amount of baking soda to raise the PH which prevents them from sticking.

2. Blow removal

When cracking them, crack the top and bottom of the egg on a flat surface, take the bit of shell from the top and bottom, and then blow on the egg. This will remove the rest of the shell with no peeling involved.

3. Shake removal

Another (and probably the coolest) way, is once your egg is boiled, fill a pot with a small amount of water, not completely covering the egg. Then take a plate and place it on top of the pot, and shake it. After only a few seconds you will see that the shell has completely fallen off the egg.

4. Spoon removal

The final way, is to crack the shell on a flat surface, then slide a spoon under the already cracked shell, and turn the egg. This will remove the shell clean and easily.
