Planned Parenthood Has Ousted Its President, Leana Wen, Amid A Dispute Over The Organization’s Direction

Planned Parenthood President Leana Wen, the first physician to head the women’s health care group in 50 years, said she was removed from her position by the organization’s board “at a secret meeting,” capping months of internal concerns over her management style and a perceived shift away from the group’s political work.

Wen attributed her departure to “philosophical differences over the direction and future of Planned Parenthood,” she said in a tweet on Tuesday.

She was in the position for less than a year.

“I believe that the best way to protect abortion care is to be clear that it is not a political issue but a health care one,” Wen wrote in a statement about her sudden termination.

Shortly after the New York Times broke the news, Wen tweeted she had only just learned of her dismissal and that she and the board had been in the process of “good faith negotiations about my departure.”

Planned Parenthood confirmed the news in a press release, announcing that Alexis McGill Johnson, cofounder of the anti-bias research group Perception Institute and Planned Parenthood board member, will temporarily replace Wen until a new president is installed.

Wen and Planned Parenthood were involved in weeks of negotiations around her departure, and the board announced the meeting internally a week ago, according to a source familiar with the matter. Wen was told she could resign, the source said, but she would not.

BuzzFeed News spoke to six sources familiar with Wen’s firing, all of whom named significant management issues as part of the board’s decision to oust Wen. At one point, Planned Parenthood’s board hired an executive management coach to improve Wen’s relationship with staff, two of the people said.

Wen’s departure comes in the midst of an intense uptick in the fight over abortion rights, as states have passed restrictive anti-abortion laws in recent months, including one in Alabama that outlaws abortion almost entirely. One source familiar with the board’s thinking said her removal was accelerated by the intensifying battle over abortion rights, saying that she was not the right leader in this climate.

Wen was first appointed as president last September, coming from her job as Baltimore’s health commissioner with a high-profile lawsuit against the Trump administration under her belt. She was first and foremost a doctor and her team put an emphasis on her medical credentials, kicking off her presidency with a campaign called “This Is Healthcare,” emphasizing Planned Parenthood’s role outside of politics, drawing a contrast with her predecessor, former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, who had turned the organization into a political powerhouse during her tenure.

As senior political staffers began to depart the organization early this year, Planned Parenthood employees, board members, and supporters were quick to express concern that Wen planned to emphasize the group’s status as a health care provider, shifting away from the political focus Richards instilled during her 10 years as president.

Wen “demonstrated a complete lack of leadership capability at a time when this organization requires an extraordinary leader,” a former senior staffer at Planned Parenthood said on Tuesday. “These are the times when people have to look out for what is best for the organization, and this was the best thing for the organization.”

“She walked in and hired people in very senior leadership roles who knew nothing about Planned Parenthood,” the former senior staffer added.

Two other sources familiar with the situation told BuzzFeed News that the management issues began on Wen’s first day as president. One of the sources said Wen was first warned about her behavior about six months ago and that the board had given her specific directives for improvement but that she had seemingly disregarded them entirely.

As Wen began reorganizing Planned Parenthood, staff grew more and more concerned. By the time the group announced its split with Wen on Tuesday, the list of top political staff departures neared the double digits.

A source familiar with the situation told BuzzFeed News that eventually the board looked up and realized nearly all the staff they knew and trusted were gone.

Deirdre Schifeling, executive director of the organization’s political arm, and Wendi Wallace, Planned Parenthood’s director of political outreach, both told staff early this year that they would be leaving the organization. Schifeling and Wallace’s departures, as described by three operatives familiar with the organization’s inner workings who declined to speak on the record, came as a hit to the political infrastructure that Richards had helped build in her decadelong tenure as president.

Under Wen’s short tenure, Planned Parenthood’s fundraising saw a significant decline without Richards at the helm.

Planned Parenthood repeatedly asserted that it was not changing direction under Wen, and Schifeling and Wallace both said their departures were unrelated to any shift at the organization under her leadership. In response to BuzzFeed News’ reporting, Wen insisted in a series of tweets that Planned Parenthood’s “core mission is providing, protecting and expanding access to abortion and reproductive health care” and that the organization would “never back down from that fight.”

During the beginning of Wen’s tenure at Planned Parenthood, the staff she brought with her distributed a 182-page handbook on rules and tips for staffing Wen. The “Special Assistant Guide” from the Baltimore City Health Department, according to a copy obtained by BuzzFeed News, details guidelines on timeliness (“Nothing can fall through the cracks”), office demeanor (“Make sure to frequently look up [from Twitter] and make eye contact with Dr. Wen to see if she is trying to communicate urgent information”), language use (“Dr. Wen ‘learns’ not ‘hears’”). and correspondence (“Try not to look at emails more than once. Take care of it then”).

“The handbook was honestly just the beginning of her management issues,” the source familiar with the situation said. “Shit has been crazy, there was a whole system of insanity: a deep mistrust of staff, giving directives that made no sense, saying things that were factually inaccurate, saying one thing then saying something else completely, micromanaging control over what people were allowed to say and not say.”

When Wen first came on she had no interest in “the long-term future of abortion access work that had already been going on, saying there was no budget for it,” the source said, adding that they witnessed staff crying in meetings with her, feeling as if their decadeslong expertise was being ignored.

Two sources told BuzzFeed News that Wen also refused to use “trans-inclusive” language, for example saying “people” instead of “women” and telling staff that she believed talking about transgender issues would “isolate people in the Midwest.” For a period of a few months, Wen sometimes went through Planned Parenthood’s press releases and documents, deleting the word “sexual” from the phrase “sexual and reproductive health,” the source said. She also resisted using the word “abortion” as a stand-alone term, preferring “abortion care” or other phrases entirely.

Wen did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for comment.

Wen brought in a tight-knit group of people from the Baltimore Department of Health with whom she would constantly have “secret meetings” without other staff, two sources said, not seeming to trust anyone else. She would often be dishonest with other staff members, the sources said, and “refused to listen to area experts who had been at Planned Parenthood for years about how to execute political work or how to talk about abortion.”

“Oftentimes we wouldn’t know that, say an op-ed she wrote was posting or what she was going to say in a speech until she had already said it,” one of the sources said, adding those kinds of actions are the reason that so many staff members left Planned Parenthood after Wen took over.

The House Voted To Condemn Trump’s Racist Tweets

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday night condemning President Donald Trump’s racist tweets about four freshman members of Congress.

The resolution passed with overwhelming Democratic support 240–187; and only four Republicans — Reps. Will Hurd, Fred Upton, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Susan Brooks — as well as Rep. Justin Amash, a new independent who recently left the Republican Party, voted in favor.

The resolution, according to a copy obtained by BuzzFeed News, formally says that the House “strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the President like immigrants, should ‘go back’ to other countries.”

It also states that the House “believes that immigrants and their descendants have made America stronger, and that those who take the oath of citizenship are every bit as American as those whose families have lived in the United States for many generations.”

The resolution was quickly drafted and passed following a series of Trump tweets over the weekend about Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, a high-profile group of progressives that call themselves “the Squad.” (The resolution does not name the members directly.)

“So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion. Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, ‘RACIST,’” Trump wrote, apparently referencing a comment Ocasio-Cortez made about feeling that Pelosi targets women of color in the caucus. “Their disgusting language … and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged.”

He added, “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

The first-year Democrats responded at a press conference Monday evening, where Omar called Trump’s remarks “the agenda of white nationalist[s].”

The resolution comes at something of an awkward time for House Democrats, who have been feuding publicly in recent weeks. Last month, despite resistance from progressives, Pelosi got behind the Republican-led Senate version of a border spending bill, which the House ultimately passed. Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib, and Pressley all voted against the bill, and have continued to speak publicly about their concerns with the measure.

“We didn’t even bother to negotiate,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN. The bill, she said, was “completely irresponsible to the American people and to those kids on the border.”

Then, earlier this month in an interview with the New York Times, Pelosi was asked about tensions with the group after they voted against the bill. “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” the speaker said. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people, and that’s how many votes they got.”

The comment sparked days of infighting — until Trump’s racist remarks over the weekend forced the entire Democratic caucus to rally.

“These are our sisters. The fact is, as offended as we are — and we are offended by what he said about our sisters — he says that about people every day. And they feel as hurt as we do about somebody in our family having this offense against them,” Pelosi said in the party’s caucus meeting Tuesday morning, according to a Democratic source in the room.

Some Democrats, like Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen, have argued the resolution on Thursday does not go far enough, pushing instead for the House to censure Trump for the tweets. House leadership has pushed back against the idea, saying a resolution would accomplish functionally the same goal and may even pick up Republican votes.

But the language in the resolution has created some drama. On the House floor ahead of the vote Tuesday, Pelosi said the tweets from the president were “racist,” infuriating House Republicans who said her comment was against the rules of the chamber and needed to be struck down.

At one point, the fighting on the floor got so intense that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver gave up presiding over the chamber and dropped the gavel, saying, “I abandon the chair.”

Eventually, the House voted to let Pelosi’s comments stand.

A Judge Has Banned Roger Stone From Posting Anything On Instagram, Facebook, Or Twitter

WASHINGTON — A federal judge on Tuesday issued an order prohibiting Roger Stone, a longtime ally and adviser of President Donald Trump’s, from posting anything on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter after finding he violated her previous order limiting what he could say publicly about his case.

Pointing to a series of Instagram posts and statements from Stone referring to his case and the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson found that Stone was “determined to make himself the subject of the story.” Once again, the judge said, she was forced to address behavior that “has more to do with middle school than with a court of law” — an apparent nod to comments she made at a previous hearing in former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort’s case.

“Your lawyer had to twist the facts, twist the plain meaning of the order and twist himself into a pretzel to argue these posts didn’t cross the line, and in the end it wasn’t persuasive,” Jackson said.

Jackson said she wouldn’t take the more serious steps of revoking Stone’s bond and putting him in jail pending trial, or holding Stone in contempt, saying it wasn’t a good use of the court’s or the government’s resources; the US attorney’s office in Washington, DC, hadn’t asked for that level of punishment. She made clear that Stone could still fundraise for his legal defense, but she said he was unwilling to conform with her orders. Her earlier order, which largely bars Stone from publicly talking about his case on any platform or forum, remains in effect.

Whether the problem was that Stone couldn’t follow “simple orders” or won’t, the judge said, “I have to help you out.”

Stone, a prolific social media user, has been largely barred from talking about his case or former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation since Jackson imposed a gag order Feb. 21. She originally gave Stone leeway to speak with reporters and to comment on social media, but issued the stricter order, which explicitly applies to social media as well as other public statements, after Stone posted a photo of the judge on Instagram with what appeared to be a crosshairs symbol.

Jackson’s order still allowed Stone to proclaim his innocence and ask for donations to support his legal defense, but nothing more. Stone puts up fundraising posts for his case on Instagram on a regular, if not daily, basis. His other recent posts have ranged from expressions of support for Trump, criticism of Democrats running for president, cooking pictures, and commentary on men’s fashion.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Jackson noted that in the months since imposing the gag order, she had allowed Stone to express himself in various ways — granting his requests to travel and to speak and allowing him to associate with various organizations, as well as advance his opinions about a variety of subjects. Stone has continued to speak and post online declaring his innocence and has made a string of fundraising appearances across the country.

The US attorney’s office filed papers in June that accused Stone of violating the judge’s restrictions on what he could publicly say about his case. Prosecutors pointed to posts by Stone on Instagram and Facebook that highlighted arguments raised by his lawyers in the case and questioned the lack of media coverage. One Instagram post screenshotted an article about a recent court filing from Stone’s lawyers with the caption, “But where is the @NYTimes? @washingtonpost ? @WSJ? @CNN?”

At a hearing Tuesday, the judge began her inquiry by asking Stone’s attorney Bruce Rogow if her Feb. 21 order was unclear. Rogow chuckled — the judge was not smiling or laughing — and said the order was not unclear. Jackson asked Rogow to confirm that Stone was completely responsible for his Instagram account, and Rogow said he was.

The judge then asked about a BuzzFeed News article from Feb. 27 — less than a week after Jackson imposed the gag order, the judge later noted — that quoted a text message from Stone responding to former Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s testimony before a congressional committee. Cohen had claimed Stone told Trump in July 2016 that Stone had spoken to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange about an email dump that would hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Asked about Cohen’s testimony by BuzzFeed News, Stone texted, “Mr. Cohen’s statement is not true.”

Stone made clear that his message was a statement, but did not elaborate on what part of Cohen’s testimony he believed was false.

Rogow told Jackson on Tuesday that Stone said he’d asked Rogow for permission before sending the text, but Rogow said he didn’t remember that. BuzzFeed News had contacted Stone’s attorneys at the time to ask if they believed his statements complied with the judge’s gag order, but they did not respond.

Jackson proceeded to question Rogow about a string of Instagram posts on Stone’s account that referenced his case or the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election in some way, including a photo of Stone with the text “Who framed Roger Stone” — à la the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit; a post regarding a Politico story about a court order in his case that referred to the publication as “biased elitist snot-nosed fake news shitheads who’s specialty is distortion by omitting key facts to create a false narrative”; a photo of House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff with the text “BULLSCHIFF” and a caption that included the line, “If it’s Schiff Flush it”; and several posts republishing articles from websites about his case.

Rogow argued that Stone was only communicating about public filings in his case, prompting the judge to point out that her order didn’t include exceptions for public filings. Rogow also argued that republishing articles written by other people wasn’t the same as Stone making statements about the case, but Jackson again pushed back, saying that’s how social media works — content goes viral because other people endorse it by sharing it.

“That’s the power of it, that’s the speed of it, that’s the multiplication of it,” Jackson said.

In announcing her decision, Jackson also noted that when Stone and his lawyers had argued against a stricter gag order in February, they hadn’t told her that he was planning to soon release an updated version of a book he’d written that addressed Mueller’s investigation and the charges against Stone. That didn’t “augur well” for his future compliance with her order, the judge said.

Rogow argued that even if Stone was talking about his case on social media, it wasn’t anything that would make it difficult to seat an impartial jury or to get a fair trial. Jackson said that wasn’t the point — she was trying to determine if Stone violated her order, and any effect on the trial would go to what she should do about it. Rogow said he believed the judge’s order was “overbroad,” although he acknowledged he hadn’t challenged it.

Rogow asked that the judge not take any additional action against Stone, and let the hearing “speak for itself.” Stone’s lawyers would make sure there were no problems with compliance going forward, he said.

“I don’t think that they violated the court order. I understand how one can look at them and come to a conclusion that, yes, they were either at the line or crossed the line. But Mr. Stone has tried to hew to that line,” Rogow said.

Assistant US Attorney Jonathan Kravis argued there was nothing “ambiguous or unclear” about the judge’s order, and that Stone had “clearly” violated it. Jackson asked what he thought she should do. Kravis said the government was not asking her to hold Stone in contempt, but said at a minimum she should clarify her order to be more specific — that it applied to posts about public filings and comments phrased as questions, for instance — and consider blocking him from using social media altogether.

Sen. Chuck Schumer Says He Supports Reparations Legislation

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Tuesday that he will support the study of reparations, calling racism the “poison of America.”

”I will support the legislation by Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee to establish a commission to study the issue of reparations for slavery and discrimination,” Schumer said.

“I’ve always believed racism is the poison of America,” adding that he was referencing French historian Alexis de Tocqueville. “Racism is the poison of America and the disparities in race affect everything.”

Schumer’s backing adds weight to the reparations legislation, which got its first hearing in the House last month. He joins House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and several Democratic presidential candidates in supporting the bill, which would form a commission to study reparations and form proposals.

“I don’t think people understand that slavery is not far away,” Schumer said, speaking to a room of reporters. “I think that’s the biggest problem. People say, ‘Oh, it happened way back then — what do we have to pay attention now?’ The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow — which is a type of semi-quasi of slavery — is still with us and so we need to do a lot more.”

The bill is unlikely to get a vote in the Senate, however. Last month, a day ahead of the congressional hearing on reparations, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, told reporters that he did not support reparations and then noted that the country had elected a black president as one way of dealing with the “original sin of slavery.”

“I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea,” McConnell told reporters at the time. “We’ve tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We’ve elected an African American president.”

Schumer addressed McConnell’s opposition Tuesday. “The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow is still with us. What McConnell said was just preposterous and that’s why I’m supporting this legislation.”
